The Reverend Allison Moore, Interim Priest-in-Charge

Allison Moore

What can I share to help you know me?

I grew up in Southern California, went to Boston to college and fell in love with cities: the energy, the clash of people with different needs and agendas, and the happy occasions when we find common purpose. Listening to women seeking safety, a new life, and often God in a battered women’s shelter in Manhattan led me to seminary and eventually to ordination. I was an assistant at Grace Church in White Plains for three years, and then rector of a parish about the size of Christ Church in Fort Lee, New Jersey for almost eighteen years. Along the way Avery and Marin, my two daughters, were born - Avery is now 25 and living in Manhattan, Marin is a first year student at Wellesley.

In 2014, looking for ways to energize my ministry, I found interim training in "appreciative inquiry," a way of being in congregations with curiosity, compassion, and creativity while we renew our sense of God’s purpose for our lives and the life of the congregation. I have served three very different congregations as interim. Holy Cross, in North Plainfield, New Jersey (that was actually back in 1994-6) was finding its way after it’s beloved pastor of 37 years retired. In 2015 I moved to St. Mark’s in the Bowery, helping them recognize the gifts that were theirs after a dynamic rector brought the parish from 25 to 80 people. In 2017 I was called to St. Barnabas in Irvington, NY - their challenge was to renew connections in the congregation and the town after a period of some complacency.

And now I’m here! Settling into the wonderfully quirky and very well maintained rectory, walking my dog around the neighborhood (you’ll meet her in the office often), and eager to get to know you and hear your hopes and dreams. When I’m not packing or unpacking boxes, I like to swim, kayak, hike, and play with various arts and crafts.

I’m looking forward to worship, book and Bible discussions, social events, outreach ministries, and one on one conversations so I can get to know you individually and collectively. The interim process has its particular tasks that are usually fun and surprising. I’ll set up office hours soon, and please feel free to call or email to set up time to get together, especially when you or someone you care about is in need but also just to say hi.

Inspiration

I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.   Ephesians 3:18
